Onboarding emails that people actually read

Three short emails and one rule: send less, say one thing and link to one place. A simple structure for welcoming new users.

Most onboarding sequences fail for the same reason: they say too much. Here is a structure we use, with a promise to keep every message under 80 words.

Email one: the day they sign up

Say welcome, name the one thing to do first, and link to it. Nothing else.

Email two: two days later

If they did that first thing, congratulate them and suggest the next. If they did not, offer a two-minute video and a reply-to address that reaches a human.

Email three: one week in

Ask a single question: “What is the one thing you hoped this would do?” Read every reply.

In Northlane, all three can be set up as one automation in a few minutes, and the run log shows who received what.
